While the highlights of 2020 have been few and far between, one major bright spot has been the creation of Metro Detroit Golfers. Established by Mike Sullivan and Kyle Bogenschutz, a simple social media group has quickly grown into the single largest golf community in the entire state of Michigan.
An offering from Brand25 Media, MDG now boasts over 30,000 members. The group features golfers of all skill levels discussing pretty much anything and everything related to the sport. Favorite local courses, questions and answers related to which ball produces the highest spin and what speaker to use to while playing are just a small sampling of the usual, daily discussions seen on the feed.
“Kyle and I are big golfers and we just love the game. We’re also both very active on social media, so this was the perfect marriage of that to be honest,” explained Sullivan, co-founder of MDG along with Bogenschutz. “To see how quickly it has grown has been nothing short of amazing. We are very grateful and are always trying to be the best stewards we can be for this community. We are always trying to make the group better and give back to the very people who have made it great, the members themselves.”
Via partnerships with courses, simulators, equipment providers, apparel makers, distilleries and even companies completely outside of golf, Sullivan and Bogenschutz have been able to give back to the group with a wide variety of giveaways. Their next initiative looks to take a further step to providing a sense of membership and pride in everything that MDG is about.
In early 2021, MDG will roll out a ‘Tour Card’ that will provide an even higher level of service to group members. Available to any group member but limited to only 1,000 on a first-come, first-serve basis the card will feature member rates to 30 of the best courses and 10 simulators across the state.
“As the group grew we wanted to offer more perks,” Bogenschutz stated. “Now we’re in a position where we can offer something really special. We wanted to give a real premium feel and give our members something that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to experience.”
The 30 courses will be a mix of both private and public, featuring the state’s top rated and most desired tracks. By presenting the MDG Tour Card, members will receive 15% off their round along with additional perks depending on the course like a free bucket of range balls, lunch at the turn, savings at the pro shop and more.
Involved private courses will pick days throughout the season that work best on their end. With a blocked off time, tour cardholders will get the exclusive opportunity to be a ‘member for a day’ and play a new course that they would previously never have the chance.
“Make no mistake, this is not a coupon book,” Bogenschutz continued. “This doesn’t offer a discount at 150 courses statewide. However, this is a true way to grow the game even more in Michigan. We’re limiting it to only the 30 best courses statewide and really give our members a feeling of exclusivity and something that you can’t get anywhere else.”
Cardholders who play all 30 courses in a season will receive next year’s card for free. To do so, they must post a photo from each course, generating plenty of organic impressions on social media for involved courses. Not to mention, the program will be featured heavily on the main MDG feed and its 30,000 members.
“When I first joined MDG, one of the first things I liked about it was how it showcased new courses. Everyone was always posting where they had just played and offering feedback on their favorite tracks across Michigan,” said Timothy Pontzer, Creative Director at Brand25. “Because of the weird way 2020 played out and the fact that I was rarely in the office, I played almost 80 rounds of golf this year. For involved courses, the benefits are immense, including the fact that there is absolutely no fee or cost for them to join. It will bring immense exposure, clicks and visits from MDG members, an obviously golf-specific group of Michiganders who are very likely to share, comment and heed the advice of cardholders. Additionally, each involved course will have the opportunity to do an exclusive giveaway on MDG as well as a personal course visit and social media review by Sullivan or Bogenschutz. Also, each course will be featured in a showcase article on MetroDetroitGolfers.com and will include photos, video and quotes from the head pro or owner.
