Rocking a MDG hat, Trosper notches an under par round at Puerto Rico Open

For the third time in seven months, Donnie Trosper earned a PGA Tour entry via a Monday qualifier. The Canton native and Michigan State product shot a 7-under 64 at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on February 22 to place second overall in a field of over 100 qualifiers to secure a spot in the Puerto Rico Open over the weekend.

It marked a bit of revenge as he lost in a playoff round at the same exact qualifier in 2020. His round saw him notch eight birdies including three in a row on 15, 16 and 17. He went 5-under on the back 9 to earn a trip to Puerto Rico.

Trosper’s trip to the United States territory in the Caribbean was fully funded by David Hall. As we’ve noted before, Trosper’s journey to the PGA Tour is being aided by a joint sponsorship between MDG and Hall Financial. In this instance, Hall went above and beyond, covering the flight and lodging for Trosper after he qualified for his third career PGA event.

Trosper was also able to look the part via a merchandise sponsorship from Miles of Golf in Ann Arbor and FootJoy. Brent Norton of Miles of Golf and Cameron Duff of FootJoy both stepped up and provided apparel, gear and equipment for his rounds at the Grand Reserve Golf Club.

“I am extremely thankful for all of this support. I definitely would not be in the position I am without all of this generosity and people reaching out to help,” Trosper said. “I truly appreciate MDG and David Hall for their belief in me and the incredible way that Miles of Golf and FootJoy came through for me this week. I can’t say enough on how much it means to me.”

For the first time in PGA Tour history – a Metro Detroit Golfers hat was officially on the course – as Trosper wore THIS HAT for his Thursday round and THIS HAT during Friday play.

Trosper started Thursday off with a bang, eagling the Par 5, 547-yard Hole 2. His round saw some highs and lows as he bogeyed 3 and 6 on the front nine while adding a birdie on 5. His back 9 saw a birdie on 13, a bogey on 14 and 17 before finishing strong with a birdie on 18 to finish the round at 1-under, his first career round on the PGA Tour finishing under par.

Windy conditions on Friday proved to be tough as Trosper notched a birdie on 3 but five bogeys and a double to finish 6-over for the tournament and ultimately miss the cut.

“It’s obviously not the result I wanted but I really take a lot from this moving forward,” Trosper said. “Just being out there playing in the first place, showing that I can score in a PGA Tour round gives me a lot of confidence. This was a great learning experience. I was very proud to be able to wear a MDG hat out there and represent all of my friends and family back home and especially all of the people supporting me to be able to be here in the first place.”

Trosper averaged 312 yards of driving distance during his two rounds, well above the field’s average for the week at 299.3.

“We’re extremely proud of Donnie and know that he’s only going to keep getting better,” said MDG founder Mike Sullivan. “It is awesome to see him achieving his dream and being able to support that.
