Michigan continues to prove why it’s one of the best states for golf, with three courses earning recognition in GolfPass' 2025 "Top 25 Most Improved Public Golf Courses" rankings. Even more impressive—two of them claimed the top two spots on the list.
Whether you're a longtime golfer in Michigan or just looking for new courses to check out, these improvements highlight why these courses are worth a visit.
1. Black Bear Golf – Vanderbilt
A few years ago, Black Bear Golf struggled with course conditions, but under new local ownership, it has made a remarkable turnaround. Now part of the Gaylord Golf Mecca, Black Bear is receiving high praise from golfers for its vast improvements in conditioning, new clubhouse features, and enhanced amenities.
“After a 10+ year hiatus, we decided to give Black Bear another try after hearing that new owners had taken over. It is back and super enjoyable. Probably the best golf value in Northern Michigan.”
The course has undergone major upgrades, including a clubhouse expansion, new bourbon bar, golf simulators, restaurant updates, and improved course maintenance. Green fees range from $28-$62, making it an affordable option for those looking to experience its resurgence.
2. The Captains Club – Grand Blanc
Designed by World Golf Hall of Famer Raymond Floyd, The Captains Club in Grand Blanc has also seen a significant transformation over the past two years. With new carts, revitalized bunkers, and improved overall course conditions, the course has won back many loyal players.
“The course has come a long way over the last two years. Love the new carts. Bunkers were in great shape and the overall course was in great shape. Thanks to the new owners for the huge improvement.”
With green fees ranging from $35-$45, The Captains Club remains an accessible and scenic course to play, surrounded by protected wetlands and wildlife.
11. The Summit at Shanty Creek – Bellaire
Located within the Shanty Creek Resort, The Summit has made noticeable improvements, earning it a spot on the Top 25 Most Improved List. While it may be a shorter course at 6,200 yards (par-71), it has seen upgrades to bunkers, cart paths, and fairways, making for a much better playing experience.
“It was nice to see that Shanty is putting some money into The Summit. The changes made have been noticeable—new sand in bunkers, better cart paths, and actually green fairways. For $50, I’ll play again.”
With green fees between $22-$50, The Summit continues to be an affordable and enjoyable option in Northern Michigan’s resort golf scene.
With Michigan golf courses continuing to invest in improvements and upgrades, these rankings are a great reminder that even long-time favorites can still find ways to get better. If you’re looking for new and improved courses to check out this season, these three should be at the top of your list.
