We want to give a MAJOR congrats to fellow MDG member Donnie Trosper on his INCREDIBLE victory this past weekend in the Florida Professional Golf Tour.
Trosper topped the field at the Daytona Beach Open with an unbelievable 20-under score over two rounds. He notched 18 birdies and 1 eagle during the span and closed out his Sunday with three straight birdies on 16, 17 and 18 to record a 61 for the final round – his best career scorecard – casual or competitive. After being tied for the 18-hole lead on Saturday evening, his strong Sunday performance saw him take the event by five shots.
“I knew I was going pretty low, but to be honest I had no idea I was actually getting close to 61,” Trosper said to us on a phone call from Florida last night. “I was just taking it one shot a time and when I hit the last putt I didn’t even realize my score. I was trying to keep it going from the day before (where he shot 63) and finish as strong as I could.”
Trosper’s previous best round was a 62 in a qualifier to earn a spot in the Workday Charity Open at Muirfield Village, one of two PGA events he played in this year. The other was the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club back in July.
“Those two PGA events this summer were a huge experience for me and I really felt that I was able to leap a few levels in my game,” Trosper explained. “Seeing how the guys on Tour prepare and approach the game was the biggest thing. Honestly, I realized that the thought process is the biggest thing. 80% of
it is mental and the rest is just managing my game.”
Immediately after the win – where he collected a nice $3000 check for his efforts – Trosper was handed a White Claw by one of his friends on the Florida Tour and got a call from his mother.
“That White Claw was one of the best tasting drinks I’ve ever had to be honest,” Trosper said with a laugh. “This one meant a lot to me. No doubt it is a big confidence boost.”
A Canton native and Michigan State product – he set the Spartans all-time single-season average of 71.37 as a senior – Trosper committed to moving and staying in Florida this winter to join the tour and continue his career. The Florida Tour runs through March.
“It definitely hasn’t been easy but it’s absolutely what I want to do,” Trosper remarked. “I’m constantly looking for tournaments to play and show what I can do. Mentally I’m in a really good place and I think it is the best asset to my game right now.”
Reflecting back on his score – something often bragged about on the MDG boards by the community but rarely actually occurring – Trosper said he probably left a few extra strokes out there.
“Of course, I can think of some I want back” Trosper said with a happy sigh. “In the first round I chunked a shot into the bunker on the Par 5 18 but was still able to get up and down. And I missed a 3-footer for birdie on another hole. But overall my putter was really good and I just worked on limiting my mistakes.”
All of us at MDG and Brand25 are incredibly proud of Donnie and will keep cheering him on!
