Last week, Metro Detroit Golfers was thrilled to announce a partnership with the Golf Association of Michigan (GAM). Now, members of the largest online golf community in Michigan will be able to select MDG as their home club when obtaining a new or renewing a GAM membership.
“We’re very excited to add MDG as an official club of the GAM,” said Chris Whitten, executive director of the Golf Association of Michigan. “MDG members can starting using the benefits right away.”
The many benefits of membership include an official USGA Handicap Index number, the ability to enter all GAM events and tournaments which span all ages and skill levels, an annual subscriptions to Golf Digest, Michigan Links Course Directory and Golfweek. Additionally, there are ‘GAM Gold Days’ which offer golfers a chance to play some of the state’s top private and resort courses starting at only $60. Also, showing a GAM card results in pricing discounts at over 100 courses and ranges around the state.
“I’m so excited for this partnership. It’s been amazing to see the growth of our group and to be recognized by GAM is awesome and really gives us a ton of credibility,” said Mike Sullivan, co-founder of Metro Detroit Golfers. “We have 30,000 members already and that is all thanks to Michigan just being a fantastic golf state. Being able to offer this is yet another way we’re looking to build the sense of community amongst our members even more.”
The GAM is the state’s governing body of amateur golf with over 55,000 individual members and over 400 course members. It is in charge of handicaps and slope/course ratings and hosts 19 amateur championships annually. A non-profit, last year the GAM celebrated its 100th anniversary.
Before taking on his role with GAM last year, Whitten spent 13 seasons with the University of Michigan golf program, eight of which he was at the helm as head coach. Prior to that he was the assistant pro at Inverness Club in Toledo and an assistant coach at Notre Dame. A Rockford native, he said he was very pleased to see how fellow Michiganders embraced his beloved sport in the unique year that 2020.
“Despite the early shutdowns, it was an awesome year all around for golf,” Whitten said. “MDG came along and was really able to capture that energy and bring in new people. I really enjoyed seeing people in the group who hadn’t played in years or were playing for the first time. Those are really cool stories and great for the game of golf. Creating community around all that and recognizing those positive experiences is great for the sport of golf and it was amazing to see you guys create a social media space for that.”
Enrolling in the GAM only costs $39 and includes all of the beforementioned benefits. However, if you are an MDG member and would prefer to put the country club that you belong to already or your favorite public course, that is completely fine as well.
“We really want to thank the GAM. For us to be recognized as a home club is glass shattering and we’re very thankful for this relationship,” Sullivan said. “This is all about growing the game and we’re excited to do it with you guys.”
