Donnie Trosper is seen swinging a club. Metro Detroit Golfers and Hall Financial logos are below him.

MDG-sponsored Trosper set to play in third career PGA event this weekend

A small cardboard box is currently on a plane, being quickly whisked across the border.

Inside are two Metro Detroit Golfers hats, ready to make their PGA debut this weekend.

The caps will crown the first PGA player ever sponsored by MDG, Canton, Michigan’s own Donnie Trosper. The Michigan State Spartans product fired a 7-under 64 at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on Monday to earn a spot in this weekend’s Tour event. His score was tied for second of the 111 players in the qualifier.

The Puerto Rico Open will mark Trosper’s third career PGA event and first of this season. A purse of $3 million is up for grabs at the Coco Beach Golf and Country Club.

Trosper’s journey has been aided by a joint sponsorship venture from Hall Financial and MDG. As we announced last week, David Hall is generously covering the cost of six events on Florida’s ‘Mini Tour’ so that Trosper can have opportunities like the one he has created for himself this weekend.

“I’m just so thankful for David and for MDG for helping me to pursue my dream,” Trosper said. “I’m trying my best to make everyone proud but to have all of this support really makes it much easier and allow me to just focus on the game itself.”

Trosper was initially going to wear a hat with ‘Hall Financial’ during events, but the company’s founder insisted on an MDG hat instead. An agreement finalized last week is already paying dividends for all parties involved and thus an overnight package to Puerto Rico was put together on Monday to ensure everyone cheering on Donnie from MDG will proudly see the group represented on the PGA Tour.

“To think that the logo of a social media group started less than a year ago will appear on the PGA Tour is just incredible,” said MDG co-founder Mike Sullivan. “We’re thrilled to be able to set this up for Donnie, David and our entire community of over 40,000 MDG members.”

In addition to covering the entry fees for the qualifiers, David Hall also stepped up and covered all of Trosper’s expenses for his trip this week to Puerto Rico including the flight, hotel and caddie.

“What Donnie is already accomplishing is amazing. I’m so happy to be able to help out and also help out the awesome MDG group,” Hall said. “When we saw that Donnie qualified we wanted to make sure that everything was taken care of for him. We don’t want him worrying about anything besides playing golf!”

Trosper has also received a merchandise sponsorship from FootJoy and Miles of Golf (Ann Arbor) for this week’s tournament. Upon learning of Trosper’s entry into the Puerto Rico Open, Brent Norton (Miles of Golf) and Cameron Duff (Detroit FootJoy rep) immediately stepped up to the plate and offered to outfit Trosper for the week.

He will be outfitted head-to-toe in brand new FootJoy merchandise due to the generosity of these two companies. He will also be playing the new Titleist ProV1x golf ball.

As we covered back in December, Trosper has put together some incredible golf this season, notching a 20-under to win the Daytona Beach Open. All of us here with MDG will be following along this weekend as he joins the likes of Ian Poulter, Hunter Mahan, Matthew Kim, Smylie Kaufman, Bae Sang-Moon, Nick Watney and 125 others in the field.
